Advancing AI for prosperity: Research 7+ meeting report

The Research 7+ (R7+) Engagement Group, research funding and performing organizations of the G7 countries plus Spain and the European Union, have developed a meeting report including proposed actions for the advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) for prosperity through science and research.

In November 2025, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, during Canada’s G7 Presidency, hosted AI experts and members of the R7+ Engagement Group in Ottawa. The objective of this meeting was to discuss the G7 Leaders’ Statement on AI for Prosperity and identify opportunities for collaboration between R7+ organizations to contribute to these goals.

The outcomes of the discussions highlighted the need to build cultures, incentives and infrastructures that strengthen scientific judgement, interdisciplinarity, and public trust, and emphasized that the highest priority and the highest return on investment in AI for science lies in people rather than hardware or individual models. The meeting report summarizes the key themes and proposed actions that emerged from the conversations.

Public research organizations and funders remain uniquely positioned to respond to the challenges relating to the use of AI for science and research. The members of the R7+ engagement group are continuing their collaboration to build on the priorities and proposed actions identified in the meeting.
