Over $9 million in funding awarded to science promotion and outreach programs

Today, the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry, announced over $9 million in funding will be awarded to recipients of the NSERC PromoScience program and NSERC Awards for Science Promotion.

A total of $9.3 million will be distributed through the NSERC PromoScience program to support 40 science promotion and outreach programs that aim to engage and inspire young Canadians to develop their skills and curiosity through science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Grant recipients will lead camps, classroom workshops, and online learning programs for young Canadians in communities across the country.

In addition, NSERC is pleased to announce this year’s recipients of the NSERC Awards for Science Promotion. The organization award, valued at $25,000 goes to the Aurora Research Institute STEM Outreach, which offers hands-on STEM activities at research centers in Inuvik, Yellowknife, and Fort Smith in the Northwest Territories. The individual award, valued at $10,000, goes to Dr. Sheila Colla at York University, for her efforts in making conservation science more accessible.

Science promotion and outreach has the capacity to foster a deeper understanding of the world, by empowering individuals and strengthening science literacy. For youth, in particular, STEM education helps develop problem solving and critical thinking skills, preparing them for the future while sparking an interest in discovery and innovation.
