Few researchers have reshaped an entire field as profoundly as Dr. Geoffrey Hinton. His pioneering work helped redefine both artificial intelligence (AI) and our understanding of intelligence itself. A Professor Emeritus at the University of Toronto, he is widely recognized as one of the “godfathers of AI” and an architect of modern deep learning.

His research laid the foundations for techniques that enable computers to learn from vast amounts of data using neural networks inspired by the human brain. Drawing on ideas from multiple disciplines, including cognitive psychology, neuroscience, physics and computer science, Dr. Hinton pursued a wide array of approaches to better understand learning and intelligence and to model these processes using artificial neural networks. Today, these methods underpin technologies used worldwide, from speech and image recognition to language processing, medical diagnostics and autonomous systems.

NSERC proudly provided support for Dr. Hinton’s discovery research from 1986, when he received his first NSERC grant to support his research on artificial neural networks, to 2017. His work exemplifies the impact of discovery-driven, investigator-led research, in which researchers are given the freedom to follow their curiosity, an approach he has often credited as central to many of the breakthroughs that established Canada’s leadership in advancing AI.

Dr. Hinton’s extraordinary contributions have earned international recognition, including the 2018 Turing Award and the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics. In 2010, NSERC awarded him its highest honour, the Gerhard Herzberg Canada Gold Medal for Science and Engineering.

Beyond his scientific achievements, Dr. Hinton has mentored a generation of leaders in academia and industry. His legacy endures through both the technologies he helped create and the global community that continues to advance his foundational breakthroughs in AI.
