Anne-Marie Thompson was appointed Vice-President, Research Grants and Scholarships, at NSERC in June 2025. In her role, Anne-Marie provides leadership to advance and mobilize discovery research, to support talent development, and to bring science and engineering to the public through science promotion endeavours.
Anne-Marie brings over 23 years of public sector leadership in designing and delivering impactful research and innovation programming, and in supporting the development of highly skilled talent across Canada’s post-secondary system. She first joined NSERC in 2009 where she held increasingly senior roles and was the Associate Vice-President of RGS from October 2020 to February 2022. Most recently, she was Chief Programs and Policy Officer at Mitacs.
As a recognized collaborator, Anne-Marie has enabled numerous national and international research initiatives, across multiple sectors, and in areas of economic and social importance to Canada. She has also been involved in the government-wide Laboratories Canada initiative that is reimagining how collaborative infrastructure can play a significant role in how federal research and science is performed. Earlier in her career, Anne-Marie enabled research and training collaborations through positions at Environment and Climate Change Canada, Natural Resources Canada, and the Department of National Defence.
Due to her considerable experience and knowledge, Anne-Marie has represented the Government of Canada as a member of Canadian delegations for international instruments, including the London Convention and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Anne-Marie holds both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in environmental engineering from Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada.
