STEMpowered: Inspiring Black youth to imagine their future in STEM

The University of Waterloo’s Engineering Outreach (WEO) program is opening doors to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) for young Canadians through an initiative called Empowering Access to STEM.

For more than three decades, WEO has been creating high-quality, hands-on programming that is vital to creating a more inclusive and representative future for science and engineering in Canada by igniting natural curiosity and cultivating a commitment to lifelong learning.

One key to this initiative is STEMpowered, a vibrant program that inspires Black youth to see themselves as future scientists, engineers or innovators. Introduced in 2022, STEMpowered creates engaging learning environments that help Black youth visualize themselves in STEM careers. It addresses the lack of Black representation in technical fields by helping to build pathways for future Black STEM professionals.

STEMpowered began as a series of March break and summer camps, eventually growing into a year-round offering. Through in-school workshops, after-school clubs and community events, Black youth engage with relatable mentors and culturally relevant programming that builds their confidence and curiosity.

Collaborations with groups like the Canadian Caribbean Association of Waterloo Region and the National Society of Black Engineers ensure programming is rooted in community and representation. The programming is immersive, empowering and designed to spark enduring interest in STEM.

Beyond STEMpowered, WEO also delivers the award-winning Travelling STEM (for Indigenous youth), Women in Engineering, and Engineering Science Quest programs, each designed to reduce barriers and foster inclusion in STEM.

With support from NSERC’s PromoScience program, the Empowering Access to STEM initiative is expanding its total reach to nearly 20,000 underrepresented youth every year. This funding enables the organization to offer free programming, cover transportation and meals, and sustain long-term engagement. By investing in inclusive STEM education, PromoScience is contributing to a future where all youth can thrive as innovators and change-makers.
